It appears ICANN is going to turn the domain world upside down and pass essentially unlimited domain extensions beginning in 2009.
So how do traditional domainers who have built their fortunes on .com's deal with this. I've always said enjoy the ride while it lasts and the rollercoaster ride is about to go into hyperdrive mode.
As I mentioned in my previous post on this subject, I don't we will see a significant diminishment in the value of .coms. I liken this huge industry change to the jewelry industry. You can make a zillion CZ rings, but that will never impact the value of high end diamond rings. So I see .com's as always being "gem" destination URL's no matter how many extensions we end up with, but the corresponding TLD will be more highly valued and the .com will become #2.
You have to also consider the reality factor. There are already a ton of country extensions out there, but you don't see many in use for worldwide site applications, nor do you see significant values on them like .com's have.
As to a strategy, I don't think there is a robustly good one for us all. I think we should just stick to together and keep the .com domains our primary investments to protect their value. If everyone starts diversifying to much it will lessen the buy budgets and take the .com market down a notch and make valuations difficult to get a handle on.
What we will see is a vast new localized "geo" domain marketplace for good combos and it may be wise to target your own local area for top keyword domain investments. This is what the new "hot domains" reality will look like:
Attorneys.Chicago
Doctors.Chicago
Accountants.Chicago
RealEstate.Chicago
Homes.Chicago
Plumbers.Chicago
and vice versa such ast
Chicago.Doctors
LosAngeles.Doctors
Best.Doctors
Top.Doctors
Cardiologists.Doctors
and this
Food.Coupons
OfficeSupplies.Coupons
DisneyVacation.Coupons
and this
Single.Women
Beautiful.Women
Smart.Women
and on and on and on
The combos will be unlimited.
So what will happen to the Net overall? I think search engines are going to have an "Oh Shit" moment even more so than domainers. TypeIn traffic will go into "Tsunami" mode and in essence we will become our own smart search engines, not using Google as much. What is happening here is the Net addressing system is going to change to a descriptor model instead of a classification model, where the address description becomes the search engine.
And this will be positive for Web users as long as the destinations genuninely reflect the descriptors keywords.
History has proven though that the simplest things in business work best and last the longest, so this could just turn the Net into a frustrating convoluted clusterfuck or it could make it much easier to navigate like a library index card system.
One thing is certain, traffic per domain will drop since traffic will be more widely dispersed amongst several billion more domains, and the solution to that as I've been saying this past year is to develop and build out your portfolio. _________________ NEW!
